What You'll Do
  • Hear the turbulent story of Checkpoint Charlie and visit the last watchtower of the Berlin border
  • Find out more about this tragic episode in history and visit the largest remaining piece of the Berlin Wall
  • Visit the legendary Mauerpark, the former no-man's land and now a young and international scene
  • Learn about the building of the Wall itself – the destruction of urban space and everyday life, and the separation of families and friends
Overview
Discover Checkpoint Charlie, one of the last watchtowers in Berlin, and the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße. Find out more about the construction of the border posts, the underground tunnels, betrayal, solidarity, personal stories, and politics.
What to Expect
Start your tour at the famous Checkpoint Charlie, the former border crossing point between East and West Berlin. The most famous victim of the Berlin Wall, Peter Fechter, died nearby, where World War Three seemed imminent during the tank confrontation.

Encounter vestiges of the Nazi era along the former death strip before reaching Potsdamer Platz station. Take the S-Bahn train to the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse. This is former East Berlin: windows were bricked up, tunnels were dug, and escapees were betrayed here. While there, learn about the border's construction, as well as personal accounts of escape attempts.

Hear stories of how the train station became a ghost station, a graveyard became a death strip, house walls became borders, and a church became an obstacle in the line of fire. Walk along the entire memorial site on Bernauer Strasse and learn about selected areas from images, sound documents, and the ruins.

The tour ends at Mauerpark, once a death strip between Wedding and Prenzlauer Berg, and now a park. Not only East and West meet here; residents and families inhabit this historical location in the summer. On Sundays, you can even stroll to the famous flea market, where you can listen to street musicians from all around the world and maybe even sing some karaoke yourself!
