What You'll Do
  • Admire the world-class art collections at Berlin's Old National Gallery
  • Discover Caspar David Friedrich's work and other examples of 19th-century German art
  • Explore the museum’s rich holdings of French Impressionism
Explore the expansive art collections of Berlin's Old National Gallery with an art historian as your guide. Learn about the creative and political contexts of the art as you tour the gallery established in the 1820s as Berlin's answer to the Louvre.
What to Expect
Enjoy a 3-hour tour of Berlin’s Old National Gallery with an art historian as your guide. Learn about the remarkable history, architecture, and collections that form Berlin's Museum Island before making your way to Gallery, which literally rises up before you like a true temple for the arts.

Start out admiring the architecture of the building housing the museum, paying particular attention to its monumental exterior staircase and magnificent indoor stairway. First opened in 1876 to be the home of contemporary art, the harmonious relationship between the museum’s architecture and its vibrant collection is a unique experience in itself.

The tour will focus on the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich to highlight German Romanticism. Admire the spiritual beauty of Friedrich’s work and learn about his unique artistic practice.

In addition to Friedrich, the tour extends its view to take in many other great examples of 19th-century German art, with the large collection of paintings by Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, and Adolf Menzel.

Once you have a sense of the German art of the period, you’ll move on to explore the museum's collection representing French Impressionism. Masterpieces by Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, and sculptures by Auguste Rodin will draw your attention and be the subjects of discussion as well.

With your guide you’ll consider the multiple cultural, creative, and political contexts that led to this period of influential art.
