Native German cook Kit Schulte will take you on a culinary journey, shopping at one of the best farmers market in Berlin. Enjoy delicious bites of Berlin history and food and prepare a typical German lunch dish of the season in Kit's home kitchen.
What to Expect
"Ich bin ein Berliner"
You may have heard of John F. Kennedy's famous words when he visited the divided capital city - and he did so at the Schöneberg town hall. Schöneberg, a centrally located district in the former West is as colorful and multicultural as Berlin can get. Many film stars, authors, poets, and scientists felt at home here – David Bowie and Iggy Pop, Albert Einstein, Hans Fallada, Klaus Kinski, Hildegard Knef, Else Lasker-Schüler, Rudolf Steiner or Billy Wilder– to name a few. With the gay and lesbian district around Nollendorfplatz since the 1920s, Berliners came to Schöneberg to dance and party. To this day, the endless restaurants, bars, cafés and clubs seem to keep this tradition alive.
The Winterfeldtmarket in Schöneberg, located at the Winterfeldt plaza next to St. Matthias Church is one of the best farmer's market you can find in Berlin. One can find produce of fresh, local organic and/or regional vegetables, fruits, fish, and meats. On Saturdays, with around 200 stalls present, you may discover rare ingredients like wild herbs, edible flowers, foraged mushrooms, wild game, as well as handcrafted condiments, household goods, and wonderful freshly made turkish delicaties.
Market Tours, Cooking Classes and Lunch
In a small group, you will meet in the morning (9:30 Wednesdays, 8:30 Saturdays) in front of the main entrance of St. Matthias church. Shop together for ingredients for a specific German dish of the season, and learn about different aspects of German food culture, seasonal customs, and organic farming. On the way to Kit the cook's home, you will stop at wonderful specialty shops, including chocolate and wine.
In Kit’s home kitchen, you will cook a typical seasonal three-course menu together and discover a "healthy and delicious" German cuisine with regional nuances, the influences from Italy and France, and Germany’s very special cultivation of herbs and their healing powers. Enjoying the home-cooked meal with beer and wine afterwards.
Both tours end at around 2 pm. You still have time to either go back to the market or go window shopping down Goltz Street and the Akazien Street with beautiful food specialty stores, more wine shops, designer clothing, antiques stores and cafés.
About dishes/meats and fish
Dishes are not announced upfront, as only fresh and seasonal products are used. Produce is used and therefore explore the wonderful surprises the seasons offer. When you agree to book with the supplier , you agree to be in for a surprise. You have the guarantee that all products are fresh, regional and/or organic (some local farmers don't use pesticides, but are too small to pay for the organic label).
It is ok to participate as a vegetarian, because there are always plenty of vegetarian options. Please inform the supplier by sending an email, that makes it easier to plan.
In case a heavy meat dish with not much of a vegetarian alternative will be prepared, it will be noted on the calendar.
All meats will be, free range and organic. Fish is mostly regional from the North Sea, or from neighboring northern regions like the Nordic Sea or the North Atlantic.
If you have allergies
If you have food allergies, it is your responsibility to communicate this upfront by sending an email and the supplier will try their best to work around it.
- If you have a gluten intolerance, please know that even though bread is a common and important food in Germany you won't eat a lot of it at lunch. Occasionally, homemade sourdough wheat bread is served as that has the least gluten. This is made with an unmanipulated, organic wheat grain, called Emmer (in Italian farro) wheat grain.
