    A fantastic day trip, with a superb guide

    We had a wonderful day with our guide Ilir and our driver Abdullah. On the trip south we took an impromptu detour to see Durrës, and on our arrival in Berat we had detailed tour. We started at the castle, visiting the Orthodox church, the ramparts, and from outside, several churches and a mosque. Ilir was full of information, not only of historical significance, but also referencing life in Albania throughout the 20th century and the past 15 years. Over lunch, we were able to discuss this in greater detail. In the later afternoon, we visited the ethnographic museum and when the clouds opened, we sheltered there from the storm and drank rakia with the museum guide. Finally, we took a short walk along the beautiful riverside. If you are interested in Balkan history, spanning the last 2500 years, and want to see something of the countryside of central Albania, this is an ideal long day tour from Tirana. We were well looked after and made to feel welcome.

    My partner and I arrived in Tirana a day prior to our scheduled tour of the Balkan Peninsula and wanted to do something unique. Since our Gate1 tour did not include a visit to Berat, we chose to visit this historic and well-preserved Albanian town. This day trip was a wonderful introduction to Albania and its history because our excellent and brilliant guide, Eler. During the 2-hour drive to and from Berat, Eler described Albania’s history from the Greek period until today and Berat’s importance as a “living” museum.

    Our guide Llir was one of the best we have experienced! His English was perfect and his sense is of humor much appreciated. We felt like we were touring Berat with a friend — his knowledge of Balkan history, iconography and Albanian life as it existed under Communist rule was an education in itself. A tour well worth taking!

    The trip was great and the guide/driver was super great! I had a very nice day. The guide was very passionate about explaining everything. I was the only person on the tour, but the guide explained everything very nicely and took a lot of my pictures. Thank you Llir for showing me around.

    Our guide Ilir was perfect! We saw magnificent lakes en route to Berat and scaled the Castle of Berat. The view atop the castle was splendid; the three neighborhoods of Berat and the famed roofs and windows of well-preserved Ottoman-era houses were visible under the clear blue skies.
