We had a small group of tourists during winter so it was a good size to move quickly and explore the highlights of each places. Vik was our guide, fluent in English. The Summer Palace was my favorite and I’m glad that Vik took us to the entrance near the iconic bridge. We were given 1 hour to explore. I would’ve wished it was at least 2 hours coz the land area was so huge. Lunch was good. The coach we used while it’s on time and clean enough, it had a strong smell of cigarette smoke in it. As indicated in the itinerary, there were 2 shopping stops for this tour.

I experienced working with Dominic twice. Once to rent an e-bike, which was well worth it on a hot day in Beijing! It was easy to get around, it was fun and he had great recommenations of what to do and see! I spent some time tooling around to see where things were, and hung out at the Houhai lake too! I also went on a Hutong tour with him where he showed me all the great hidden food places and was patient enough to wait while I pinned them on my map. He also shared good historical information which I appreciate as a history learner.

Getting to Temple of Heaven from our hotel was a breeze, and had no trouble meeting up with our guide and other group members. Lots of walking but at a good pace that allowed for photos as well as information sharing. Travelling on the subway to Tiananmen Square was fun. The Forbidden City was fabulous and our guide was great in helping us see the best of this massive site. Lunch there was disappointing and some of the food tasted off. Continued the tour which lasted around 6-7 hours. Major problem at the end when trying to get a taxi back to our hotel and guide advised they didn't really do picks up where the tour finished and suggested getting the subway by ourselves. This felt too overwhelming so we wandered around, got harassed by rickshaw drivers and ultimately took one (at a highly inflated cost) after feeling lost and exhausted. This difficulty with transport needs to be addressed or at least advised prior to the tour as it ultimately soured what was a really good tour.

  • Great Wall Hiking: Small Group

    6. Great Wall Hiking: Small Group

your guide will meet you at 8am and then drive to Simatai West. You will start the hiking around 10:30am, and it will take about 3 hours to complete. A lunch at a local farmer’s restaurant will be organized after the hiking before returning to the city. This section offers arguably the finest hiking anywhere on the Great Wall. It is extremely photogenic, with over 15 watch-towers, and steep gradients that give constantly changing perspectives and wide, open views. There is fascinating variety in the watch-towers here. Some have two storeys, others three. Some have flat roofs, others rounded and others again are pitched with upturned eaves. This section of the wall is wild, ruined, preserved and original. On a clear day, it is difficult to fail to take good photographs here.

What an amazing day! We had wonderfully blue skies and very little wind on our hike from Simatai to Jinshanling. Tau was a fantastic guide. He provided great insight to the wall, region, history, and peoples. He made sure everyone was comfortable with the pace and had plenty of time for photos whenever we liked. Mind you, there are a lot of stairs to climb on this 15 tower trek, but they are doable and so worth it. ADDED BONUS: I didn’t expect too much from the included lunch after reading previous reviews, but it was one of our favorite meals during our stay in China! Highly recommended!

  • From Beijing: Great Wall at Mutianyu Half-Day Hiking Trip

    9. From Beijing: Great Wall at Mutianyu Half-Day Hiking Trip

After pick-up by your guide at your hotel, make the 1.5-hour drive to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. Have a rest and enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. You'll then have two options for travelling up and down the wall: round-trip cable car or chairlift, or by toboggan. Take 7 minutes to reach the top of the wall (instead of the 45 minutes it takes to go by foot up the steps!). The cable car ascends to and descends from the 14th watchtower, from where you can walk east to the 23rd watchtower, the most beautiful part of the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. The cable car will take you to the 6th watch tower - recommended for those in great physical condition, as the hike to the 23rd watchtower from the 6th is more difficult. Spend the day exploring this truly extraordinary Wall that has captured the imagination of the world for centuries. After returning to the foot of the Grea...

Just amazing and has to be done. Our guide Jin made it so much more worthwhile to hike and enjoy a wonder of the world.

  • Badaling Great Wall and Ming Tombs Coach Tour from Beijing

    10. Badaling Great Wall and Ming Tombs Coach Tour from Beijing

Benefit from early morning pick-up at your hotel in Beijing and then travel in an air-conditioned coach to Dingling Tomb, one of the 13 tombs of the Ming Dynasty emperors. See the underground palace and mausoleum of Emperor Wan Li.  Learn about the ancient art of jade carving at a jade shop, and then enjoy a traditional Chinese lunch at a local restaurant. Drive to the Badaling section of the legendary Great Wall of China. Located in the dramatic Yanshan Mountains, Badaling is the most famous and best-preserved section of the wall. Ride the cable car up the mountain (at your own expense) or hike to the 16th-century ramparts for far-reaching views. Take souvenir photos from the comfort of the coach. Then, get the chance to take part in a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and purchase different blends to take home.

Generally the trip was OK. But the lunch was served too early at about 10:15 and was bad. The guide collected the trip reviews collectively and it was not possible to express your real point of view. I have an impression that this is a common way of collecting reviews but I hope to be wrong. All in all recommended:)
