Combine history and cute panda bears on this 8-hour excursion through the historic heart of Beijing. Visit the Summer Palace, mysterious Lama Temple, and Beijing Zoo to see black-eyed Giant Pandas up close.
What to Expect
This full day excursion of Beijing will introduce you to several icons of the ancient city, including cute panda bears, the beautiful Summer Palace and the mysterious Yonghe Lamasery. During the day, you will also get time to do some shopping at the Lihengtang Pearl Market.
Begin at the Yonghe Lamasery, one of the best examples of the region's Tibetan Buddhist temples. Also known as the "Palace of Peace and Harmony Lama Temple," or simply “Lama Temple,” it incorporates diverse architectural styles from the Hans, Mongolians, Manchurians and Tibetans.
The impressive 60-foot Maitreya Buddha sitting in the main hall is carved from a single sandalwood tree.
Wander through the complex and soak up the enchanting atmosphere before moving on to one of the high points of every trip to Beijing, a visit to Beijing Zoo. Here you will see Giant Pandas, a living Chinese treasure and iconic symbol of wildlife across the world as the logo for the World Wildlife Fund.
The zoo, housed in the grounds of a former Ming dynasty manor, is home to many rare animals endemic to China, but it is the bamboo-chewing, black-eyed pandas that are its chief draw.
After a pause for lunch, you will visit the scenic Summer Palace. Used by emperors for eight centuries, the Empress Dowager Cixi had the palace renovated in the 19th century, adding the manmade lake visitors see today. Stroll through one of Beijing's favorite parks before the end of the tour and your hotel drop-off.
