Maspalomas: Barranco de los Cernicalos Rainforest Hike

Please let us introduce ourselves: we are Inés & Juanjo, 2 authentic native guides in Gran Canaria. With us, you are going to discover and experience the beauty of this island with real "local eyes". For us, Barranco de los Cernícalos, is not only one of the most beautiful hiking paths in the island: is a very important part of our own life, as our relatives have lived here and for us it is like a "playground". We will go on a hike where you will discover our endemic flora and fauna in a setting that looks like something out of a fairy tale. With us, you will not only learn about "technical information", but also how local people have been living and adapted their way of life in this place, you will understand how the resources of this area were exploited: water, materials to create tools, plants (beyond their medicinal use). But, above all, you'll have a great time. There are plenty of surprises and fun in store for you along the way - are you ready for the adventure? Walking distance: 8-9 km Unverness: 300 m Difficulty: Easy - Medium Hours walking: 4 - 4.5 hours It's mandatory to bring proper hiking shoes and clothes, sun protection and water enough.

Explore the Barranco de los Cernícalos ravine with an instructor. Experience a real-life adventure as you abseil down waterfalls, hike through the jungle, and cross pools. Meet your instructor and receive your wetsuit, harness, and helmet. Learn how to use the equipment and make sure it's properly fitted before setting off on a 20-minute hike through a rural area. Enjoy views of the northeast part of Gran Canaria as your guide shares the island's history. Then, it's time to get your adrenaline pumping. Follow the watercourse and rappel up to 12 meters down a waterfall under your instructor's guidance. Slide across pools and walk through the jungle as you descend the ravine. After abseiling down 4 waterfalls, you will be at the narrowest part of the canyon. Cross a waterfall and then head back along an adventure trail to the starting point. Take a break for a snack and enjoy views of the canyon from above.

The hike was super enjoyable. First, Ines and Juanjo added their personal spin on it by sharing lots of stories about their ancestors, who were from Gran Canaria and lived a traditional life. Second, while we hiked up the hill, they used lots of storytelling along the way, which made us appreciate the rainforest and nature in general so much more. Third, we were well taken care of, especially during the tricky parts of the hike with clear instructions. Fourth, as pick-up was from Maspalomas only, we could pretty much drive straight to the hiking location, meaning no 2-hour ride collecting participants. Lastly, I loved the gecko experience. :-) Thanks to both for making this a memorable hike!

I'm not sure if we would have found the way without a guide. The guides were also able to show us one or two highlights that we would have missed on our own. And we would never have thought that "tons" of lizards would show up if you lure them with banana peel. Our guides were very committed and we were given a lot of information in an entertaining, relaxed way.

We really enjoyed this day! Our guide Manuel guided us in a very pleasant way through the tour! My friend and I were lucky that we were the only 2 who had signed up for this day, so we got the luxury of a private tour. The variation of walking, sliding and abseiling made it very nice! Highly recommended!!

The guide Manuel was very kind, professional and really took the time to explain us a lot of tips and history of the island. Very great experience I definitely recommend it to everyone! Thanks a lot Manuel

Nice guide, good equipment, nice track in beautiful environment. Not too difficult but fun.
