Castel Gandolfo: Vatican Observatory experience

Castel Gandolfo: Vatican Observatory experience

Discover the astronomical observatories of the Vatican Observatory of the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo. Climb to the third floor of the palace and admire the view of Lake Castel Gandolfo from the panoramic terrace. For the first time in almost ninety years since their construction, the astronomical domes of the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo are opening their doors to visitors. These are two perfectly functioning astronomical observatories of the Vatican Observatory: the “major dome” with a diameter of 8.5 meters, equipped with a Visual Telescope, for observing stars and planets; and the “minor dome”, with a diameter of 8 meters, with the Double Astrograph, used for photographic surveys of the sky and the position of the stars. Access allows, via a spiral staircase, access to the third floor of the Papal Palace, on the highest point of the panoramic terrace, which offers a splendid view of the lake of Castel Gandolfo. It was Pius XI, on September 29, 1935, who inaugurated the new headquarters of the Vatican Observatory, as its transfer from the villa that Leo XIII had built in the Vatican Gardens became necessary due to the light pollution of the City. The astronomical observatory was thus refounded and entrusted to the Jesuits, equipping the Observatory with three new telescopes and an astrophysical laboratory for spectrochemical analysis. Among the various study programs of the new institution, in those years, an important research on variable stars should be remembered.

We battled a bit to find our tickets. We got to the location, but there was no guide. We stood around for 20 minutes, then went inside the corner shop and asked if they knew where the guide was?? They looked on their counter and found my two tickets We had to rush to make our time slot! The Museums were absolutely fabulous. Afterwards we wanted to go into St.Peters (free entry), but the line was way too long. Will have to do it a next time. Still thousands of travellers beginning of October.

The start with the meeting point was a bit strange. We were the only ones at the meeting point. And the person for the tickets arrived late & we initially had the feeling that we had been cheated... But it worked out. We were able to get past the gate. The audio guide was included in the cost, but it's worth it. Take your time. More like 5-6 hours!!! There are hardly any opportunities to sit down!!! It's very impressive!!!

€215 for 2 adults and a teenager. It's still expensive... but we couldn't avoid a 2-hour queue.

Being in the Vatican Museum in ten minutes is just incredible! And what masterpieces!

Easy to locate and good attention and fast service.
