Adventure and history blend on this Kanchanaburi tour. Ride an elephant through the jungle, float down a river on a bamboo raft, and visit the real "Bridge on the River Kwai" all in one day, beginning and ending in Bangkok.
What to Expect
Kanchanaburi, only two hours from Bangkok, is another world altogether. Here you can ride on a bamboo raft down a river. You can also see the infamous "Death Railway," which Allied prisoners of war and local people were forced to build.
Visit the War Museum at Kanchanaburi and cemetery before taking a train ride on the Death Railway at 10:40. You will pass through the original wooden viaduct constructed by Allied POWs.
The bridge immortalized in the movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai" did not survive the war but was rebuilt. However, unlike the movie, the POWs did not destroy it, and you can find out the real story on the tour.
Following a buffet lunch at a riverside restaurant, we drive away from the city to Saiyoke Elephant Camp. Here you take a 1-hour ride through the jungle atop an elephant – quite an experience – as well as float down the river for an hour on a natural bamboo raft. A visit to a temple that looks after tigers is also possible.
