What You'll Do
  • See the most beautiful landscape of south coast São Miguel, Azores
  • Visit the only tea plantation in Europe and part of the north coast landscape
  • Enjoy a great day to remember at your own pace
Furnas is the easternmost of the three active central volcanoes on the island of São Miguel in the Azores. For lunch, try the famous local stew (Cozido das Furnas) cooked in the volcanic soil and enjoy the lake for its natural beauty and mineral waters.
What to Expect
Depart from Ponta Delgada, along the island South coast, towards Furnas valley. On the way stop at Lagoa village, to visit a traditional pottery, and Vila Franca do Campo - former capital of the island - with a fine historical center.

Your first stop at Furnas will be on the banks of the lake, to watch as your lunch - the cozido na caldeira - is dug up from the volcanic soil. Cooked by the natural volcanic heat, is a traditional Portuguese stew with all the ingredients that characterize this typical dish.

After lunch, you will visit Pico do Ferro belvedere for a panorama of the valley. Return to Ponta Delgada by the island's North road, visiting the Tea Plantations, the only place in Europe where you can see a tea factory and tea plantation.
