  • Explore the Roman heritage of Provence
  • Visit the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape
  • Enjoy a wine tasting in Gigondas and Châteauneuf du Pape
Full description
Tucked between the Alps to the east and the Rhone River to the west, Provence is a rich tapestry of natural and manmade wonders. On this tour departing Avignon, you will combine a tour of its Roman heritage with a trip to the famous vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Start your afternoon wine-tasting tour with the village of Gigondas. Located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail hill range, the vineyard covers an area of 12 km² and the wines produced belong to the Crus of the southern Côtes du Rhône. The Grenache noir expresses its full flavor in glimmering red wines with pronounced tannins, a robust body, and a solid propensity for ageing. Afterwards, stop at the ruins of the castle built by the former Popes who relocated the papacy to Avignon in the 14th-Century and used it as their summer residence. Then drive to the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the world’s most popular wines. Discover the different grape varietals, such as Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, which give distinctly fruity and spicy wines. The 13 varieties of grapes combined with the various soils create a large palette of complex red wines and elegant white wines. Enjoy a wine-tasting in one of the numerous cellars of the village before going back to Avignon.
  • Wine-tasting and visit of the winery at Châteauneuf-du-Pape
  • Wine-tasting at Gigondas (please note, that from April 1, 2020, onwards, the Gigondas tasting will not be apart of the tour. Instead the tour will feature 2 tastings at Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

    Good tour.

The tour guide was knowledgeable and pleasant. The tour was in a small van, so the group was quite small -- 7 of us -- which was excellent and allowed for the asking of more questions. The title of the tour is a bit misleading in that you will visit 2 wineries, only one of which is in Chateau-neuf-de-pape. Also, the tour was advertised as being in English, but one couple present preferred French. -- actually did not seem to speak English at all -- so guide had to repeat everything twice, but no one seemed to mind. The one other piece of feedback was that the information I was sent on signing up said that I needed to call and confirm with the actual tour provider, but the phone number given (same as on their website) was out of order. I sent them an email instead and they confirmed.

Beautiful tour of wine country and Roman heritage.

Me and my three friends really enjoyed this tour. It was intimate with 8 people in a van, and our guide, Melanie was very informative, polite and attentive. My favourite thing about the tour was the focus into the area (Chateauneuf de Pape and Orange) and the things we did and saw that we would have been oblivious to without Melanie and this tour. I would recommend to any wine, culture and history lovers.
