Discover how to make traditional Greek food on a 4-hour cooking class, including a tour of a local market. Start your day at meeting point, where you’ll meet the chef. Then head to the market to pick up some ingredients and discover hidden places to eat, drink, and shop in the area. Your cook will show you some of the more interesting and unique products on offer, and give you tips on how to use them. Back at the cooking studio, you’ll be shown how to prepare the food and enjoy a hands-on experience making various dishes yourself. The course has been designed to be simple enough for any cook, no matter the skill level.  When the cooking class is over, you can sit down with your classmates and chef to taste what you have created. Wine and soft drinks are served with the meal. Your cook will also give you access to our recipes, so that you'll be able to make these dishes again at home.

Make your own way to the starting point in the flea market neighborhood of Monastiraki, located in the heart of Athens Old Town. Meet your tour host in the area’s central square, and then walk to a beloved downtown bakery. Head inside to meet your instructor — an experienced local chef — and begin with an overview of the dishes you’ll be creating during your class as well as an introduction to the tantalizing world of Greek cuisine. Then, set to work preparing and cooking a traditional 3-course meal with the chef close by to show you the correct techniques. Dishes vary, but typically include Greek delights like tzatziki, galaktompoureko (creamy custard pie), and spinach phyllo pastries. After your class, head up onto the bakery’s roof and sit down with the rest of your small group to enjoy the food that you and your fellow foodies have cooked. While you eat, relax with a glass of red or white wine, and admire the unparalleled views of the city, topped by the majestic Acropolis of Athens, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Onion Athens is a place where learning to cook traditional four-course Greek recipes takes a different approach. The focus is on learning by doing, using what you have, what’s in season, and most importantly, by following true, traditional recipes the way Greek mothers and grandmothers did in times gone by. This is truly a hands-on cooking experience combined with a fun dinner party environment - just like getting an invitation from a local Greek friend! You will have a Greek coffee with lukumi with friends in the morning and take a quick walk around Monastiraki area, before heading to the Athens Central Market to choose fresh ingredients. You will then be greeted with ouzo and meze, and enjoy the meal you cooked with great Greek wine, and, of course, the sounds of Greek music. The small class size means it is a truly hands-on event, and means you get to cook and eat each and every item. Each class includes a four course meal, ouzo and wine, and  meal will close with a Mastich liquor and Greek yogurt and honey.

One of our best activities in Athens! It was such fun to walk through the market and learn about the different meats, fish, vegetables, olives, etc. Then to cook authentic Greek recipes was a real treat--we are now so inspired to try them at home. Our chefs were exceptional--answered any questions, made us laugh, inspired us, taught us. My daughter is gluten and dairy free, and they readily catered to her: modifying the recipes to accommodate us. And they did it with seemingly no effort.

It was an amazing tour of the market. The class was fun, varied, very interesting and entertaining. It was a pleasure to ‘break bread’ with a diverse small group of people from all over the world. The cooking experience was enough of a challenge enticing us to prepare more Greek dishes in the future. Thank you for a memorable adventure in the realm of Grecian cuisine.

Our family, including 3 college-aged students, participated. Lots of fun, one of our highlights while in Athens. Instructors were great, even our non-cooks in the family really enjoyed.
