Full description
Admire the authentic mainland of Greece, first visiting the historic Thermopylae, the original location of the famous battle between ancient Greeks and Persians in 480 B.C. See the battlefield, the statue of King Leonidas and visit the museum. The journey continues with beautiful views of the mountains and fields until you reach Meteora.  Visit two of the six remaining Byzantine monasteries, built back in the 14th and 16th centuries. Take photos and videos of the marvellous landscape while your guide shares the local history. Afterward, your driver will take you to Kalambaka, a scenic town below the rocks with many options for a delicious traditional Greek lunch.  Visit the oldest church in the area, where you see a Greek inscription on the wall which testifies to the existence of an ancient Greek temple at the same location. Wonderful day with amazinggg views! Our guide, Costas, communicated promptly and was very pleasant throughout. This tour was definitely worth paying a little extra, as we had the convenience of a private Mercedes van versus dealing with catching a public train. The drive each way is long, but totally worth it. You won’t be disappointed!

I also considered a train tour, but I was physically worried about the short trip schedule because it was early in the morning and late at night, so it was the correct answer for a car. It was a family of four, including two elementary school students, with a driver in a seven-seater car, and the price was the same as for four train tours. Instead of going to Thermopylae, I went around three monasteries in Meteora. I'm glad I went. Thank you very much.

Meteora itself was absolutely breathtaking - the cliffs and the beautiful terrain. We only got to see 2 monasteries since the others were closed, so if the monasteries are a priority for you, make sure to go early and perhaps visit those that close early first (our driver took us to the one closing late first, which wasn the ideal). The driver did however offer to take us to a third monastery, where we could wait until it opened, but we wanted lunch instead. The driver was very friendly and nice. Also we did not stop at Thermopylae (it was a long day, I do not think we had time for that) or got a water bottle, so make sure to bring some water with you.
