Full description
Temple of Poseidon and Cape of Sounio sunset tour: You will drive along the south coast to the Athenian Riviera, which will allow you to easily reach the otherwise hard-to-get-to Sounion. Once there, you will be dazzled by the famous landscapes that surround Sounion. In the times of the ancient Greeks, this site was revered as sacred ground dedicated to the gods Poseidon and Athena. You can marvel at the Temple of Poseidon, which perched upon the cliff’s edge 70 meters above the sea. Later, walk the blessed earth of Sounion, one of the places sung about it in Homer’s Odyssey. You can then stand upon the same cliff where it is said King Aegeus threw himself off. The tale is told in Greek mythology that Aegeus told his son Theseus that if he defeated the Minotaur, he should return to Athens with ships bearing white sails. Theseus forgot this request, and when Aegeus saw Theseus’ black sails, he threw himself from the Sounion in despair. While here, you can watch the sunset over this legendary horizon. It was a nice tour. The bus is very comfortable and you learn alot from the audio tour. Be aware it is a sunset tour so you'll arrive with only an hour and a half to do things. This is fine if you only want to have a drink and explore the temple. If you want to explore the beaches and towns you will need more time.

thanks to our super nice and funny guide Dimitri. He speaks English, Spanish and Greek of course. We went in vans with about 15 people it was good kids. the view on Cape Sounion was superb at sunset and we were able to enjoy the full blue moon in the same evening. A lot of people but with patience we were able to return to Athens without incident.

The sunset at Cape Sounion was amazing, however, I felt too much time was spent there. It wasn’t a guided tour as such. We were met by someone from the tour company who joined us on the bus, however, all commentary was prerecorded .. unfortunately I fell asleep right before we arrived and missed the info relevant to the site! (Totally my fault). There is a restaurant/cafe up there and in hindsight that would have been good to grab a bite to eat or drink before entering the ruins to pass some time, as once you enter you are not supposed to get a pass out and return. The hop off/on passes are a great way to get around ... although the Port Piraeus stop is basically for the cruise passengers I think .. pulls into the carpark for people to get off and on and continues on. The audio also didn’t work when we used that line...was cracking up. The drivers are amazing!
