Spend a day out from Aswan visiting the majestic rock temples of Abu Simbel in Southern Egypt. You'll see the imposing statues and architecture of Temple of Ramses II and Temple of Nefertari on the banks of Lake Nasser at this symbolic archeological site.
What to Expect
Abu Simbel is an archaeological site with 2 massive rock temples. In Southern Egypt, the site is on the Nile River, about 290 km (180 miles) south-west of Aswan.
You'll be picked up from your hotel in Aswan in a private car early in the morning and drive to Abu Simbel. The temples here are unique both in style and in their setting on the banks of Lake Nasser.
First you will visit the Sun Temple of Ramses II. The site is aligned so the sun's rays travel through a mountain pass and illuminate Ramses' sanctuary twice a year–on 22 October and 22 February. The Temple of Ramses II was dedicated to the 4 universal gods: Ptah, Re-Her-Akhtey, Amun-Re, and to Ramses ll himself.
Then you'll visit the Temple of Queen Nefertari, who was one of the royal wives of Ramses, and thereby also the wife of the Sun God. The 2 temples bring Ramses II, Nefertari, Hathor and the Sun God together as one.
After you finish your exploration of the Abu Simbel temples, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Aswan.
