Setubal & Tróia: Sado Estuary Dolphin Watching Boat Trip
- Duration: 2.5 hours
João picked us up close to our Airbnb. Then we drove round about 45 minutes to the first vineyard/museum. We were shown around and learned about the history of the company (7 generations) and how the vineyard is making wine. Afterwards we had a wine tasting with two wines. The second spot was a farm where we saw cork trees, tasted grapes from the bush and tried 5 local wines. The last stop was a village that acts as a storage for local producers. Here we tried another 5 wines and had a great goat cheese plate. You are not forced or animated at any stage of the trip to purchase the wine. It's your personal choice. João is a very talkative person. We learned a lot about wines from him, but also Portuguese olive oil, his personal story and wine-production efforts. He's a really great guy and we totally recommend the trip. The whole trip was covid19 regulations conform. A small tip - take some water with you because there was none offered with the wine tasting.
The ocean and the coastline of sesimbra on a kayak is an experience of its own. But that's not all you get. Enter Gabriel, a nature angel in disguise as a guide. From one second to the next you will be giggling and then transfixed by his utmost respect for the ocean. Wonderful company. (if you go on a 'less' beautiful day - you might get as lucky as we did and end up with an essentially private tour which felt like kayaking with a friend - ask him about the orcas and the netflix documentary 'My octopus teacher'!)
The tour was great, the sights are beautifull! Great clear blue sea and some amazing cliff formations. Worth the arm pain of the paddling :). The guide was also great and friendly. Only suggestion I would give to the guide is keeping the team together, as at some point on the way back we felt the responsibility to keep an eye of the last kayak as the girls were far behind the rest. Should something happened to them noone would have noticed.
Our guide Tanya was helpful and personable, making this an enjoyable day. The minivan was clean, modern and in good condition. The locations were photogenic, and, with Tanya's input, interesting. We departed the schedule by having a longer lunch in Sesimbra than expected, but this was no problem. The wine tasting was enjoyable, and the wines reasonably priced to buy. A good day, recommended. All reasonable covid precautions were taken.
This tour is a great chance to see those areas of the Lisbon suburbs, where you can't easily get to by public transport. During this trip you're going to have stunning views, passing by tiny villages, have a lunch in a small pretty hidden town, get inspiration and ideas for your next days, and of course taste a very local wine. Was awesome!
