Explore the mysterious 12th-century temples of Angkor Wat on a 4-day sightseeing tour, and see the main sights of the former capital of the Khmer Empire. Admire the bas reliefs of the jungle-covered monuments, visit a floating village, and more.
What to Expect
Enjoy a comprehensive 4-day tour of the mysterious monuments of the Khmer Empire at Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Som temples. Glide the impressive flooded forest of Tonle Sap by boat to visit a floating village, watch a traditional Cambodian Apsara Dance Show, learn how silk is produced, and more.
Day 1: Angkor Thom - Angkor Wat
Following a pick-up from Siem Reap Airport, transfer to your hotel before the start of your first day’s tour. Once you have settled in, your guide will take you on the Small Circuit of Angkor Thom to see the Bayon Temple, and the Hindu temple of Phimeanakas. Discover where the Angkor rulers watched their returning armies from the Terrace of the Elephants.
After lunch, explore the magnificent temple of Angkor Wat, built by King Suryavarman II in honor of the god Vishnu. Hidden among thick jungle and fig trees, it’s the most impressive of all the Khmer temples, and the site of the former Khmer capital. Return to Siem Reap for the night.
Day 2: Banteay Srei Temple - Ta Prohm - Kampong Phluk
Today starts with a tour of the Banteay Srei Temple, built largely of a hard red sandstone that can be carved like wood. Brick and literate were only used for the enclosure walls and some structural elements, and the temple is especially remarkable for the beauty of its sandstone lintels and pediments. Drive back to the temple of Ta Prohm, instantly recognizable from the blockbuster movie “Tomb Raider.”
In the afternoon you will transfer to Kampong Phluk, and sail to the most atmospheric floating village in Siem Reap. Learn about everyday life on Tonle Sap Lake as you glide through the flooded forest. Watch a magical sunset, before you transfer back to Siem Reap.
Day 3: Preah Khan - Neak Pean - Ta Som - East Mebon
Today you will visit the sanctuary of Preah Khan, built on the site of Jayavarman VII's victory over the invading Chams in 1191. Largely unrestored, the complex has been left to the mercy of the jungle, creating Angkor’s unique atmosphere. You will also see the island temple of Neak Pean (The Entwined Serpents), and the small temple of Ta Som, where the eastern outer gopura (entrance) has been overgrown by a sacred fig tree.
Admire the guardian elephant sculpture of the 10th-century East Mebon, built on an artificial island at the center of the now dry East Baray reservoir, and go to the temple mountain of Pre Rup, believed to have been used for funerals
After lunch, visit Artisan D’Angkor to see where high quality wooden marble and stone statues are produced, and admire the unique silk products of the Khmer. Return to Siem Reap for an evening tour of the Night Market, and enjoy dinner in the city’s most popular entertainment district.
Day 4: Angkor Silk Farm
Your trip ends with a visit to a silk farm to watch locals weaving silk by hand, using the traditional ikat method. Learn how the silk is extracted from silk worms by harvesting mulberry bushes, and take a journey through the entire process, including the spinning of silk from the cocoons, and silk dyeing. There will be time to buy some silk items before lunch at a local restaurant. End your tour with a stroll around the Old Market and Central Market to pick up some last minute souvenirs or gifts.
