Visit Santarém, one of the oldest cities in the Amazon, and take a speedboat to an area called “The Meeting of Waters” where the sandy-colored Amazon River and the dark Tapajós River waters meet. Start your river adventure at the Municipal Market called Mercadão 2000 and see the arrival of regional boats bringing their products and a wide variety of fish to sell. Afterward, follow your guide through the historic center of Santarém. Admire the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Conceição and then enter the João Fona Museum, which houses indigenous artifacts and provides a comprehensive history of the city. Head to a scenic viewpoint to gaze at the city and the rivers before embarking on a typical “Voadeira” boat, to see the meeting of the waters of two rivers, the Amazonas and Tapajos. Continue to down the Açú stream, past the impressive floating water lilies, and be on the lookout for colorful birds and the elusive pink dolphins. On the journey back, sail in front of the shores of the Santarém and then return back to your accommodation in Alter do Chão.
