Off the Beaten Track On Foot: Oslo’s Historic & Trendy East

Off the Beaten Track On Foot: Oslo’s Historic & Trendy East

This beautiful, two-hour long walking tour will take us through a number of trendy neighbourhoods, past cultural hotspots, lush parks and stunning waterfalls in the central eastern part of the city. We begin this tour at Kulturkirken Jakob (Jakob Culture Church). From here we move into the Grünerløkka district. You’ve probably heard it is known for bars, restaurants, and independent shops, but I’ll also tell you about its really interesting history. I live in this area, so of course I will point out all the hippest places right now. We’ll discover a very photogenic creative arts and music hub right by the river, then follow the river upstream, along delightful paths to Vulkan, a model for green urban living, with cutting edge venues and Oslo’s best food hall. We will then make our way along cobbled Damstredet and picturesque Telthusbakken with its charming tiny wooden houses from the early 19th century. At the top of the hill we will visit the Cemetery of Our Saviour, a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city, where the final resting places of Edvard Munch and Henrik Ibsen can be found. We will then carry on up along the Akerselva river, and see how the river’s factories have been converted into design centres and art academies. We’ll stroll through the mist of urban waterfalls while we learn about the impact the Industrial Revolution had on Oslo, and the areas surrounding the river in particular. If you like we will stop for tea, coffee or a delicious waffle at a cute spot on top of one of the waterfalls. From here we will head back into the hustle and bustle of Grünerløkka. Weaving our way through numerous lesser known streets packed with history, we’ll pass award winning cafes, buzzing hangout spots, and I can point out my favourite cocktail bars and restaurants. Depending on your wishes, the tour will either finish at one of the tram stops in Grünerløkka, or at Ankerbrua, close to where we started. Why choose this tour? As an independent guide, I have created my own tour, driven by my passion for Grünerløkka’s rich culture and history. After years of designing itineraries and scripts for larger companies, I’ve embarked on my own to offer a more personal, authentic experience. Unlike the generic tours provided by companies that subcontract local guides, my tours are thoughtfully crafted and full of personal insights, ensuring a unique experience. Who is this tour for? * Solo Travellers * Couples * Romantics and adventurers * Photo takers * Groups of friends * If you want a deep dive into local culture * Anyone who wants a unique, personal experience

If you're planning a trip to Oslo, I highly recommend starting your adventure with the Oslo Street food Culture tour. It provides an excellent introduction to Norwegian cuisine, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of the local flavors and culinary traditions. The experience was not only about tasting delicious dishes; the storytelling behind each food item added a rich layer of context to our experience. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and offered valuable insights on what to try while exploring the city. Additionally, the tour took us to several charming neighborhoods and hidden gems that we likely wouldn’t have discovered on our own. Overall, it was a fantastic way to immerse ourselves in Oslo's culture while enjoying some truly unforgettable food. Don't miss this opportunity to kickstart your Oslo adventure!

My wife & I very much enjoyed this walking tour! Our guide, Shaf, was energetic and knowledgeable. We got a great tour of Grünerløkka including recent history and trends. The tour was great exposure to neighborhood food - it's more than just "here's some reindeer and salmon." Instead, we ate street food new & old, different meats, and the local beer was a nice touch. Many of the vendors were engaging as well, they were happy to host our small group of 2. I appreciated Shaf's commentary on Norway and our discussions on the local economy. Overall this was a great tour. It may seem expensive, but keep in mind food in Norway is itself extremely expensive.

Shaf was excellent historian and guide. All the foods were delicious especially liked the classic Norwegian waffle, the charcuterie board and the quaint cocoa shop… the cocoa you could add your own toppings. Book this tour

Christian was a great guide, very knowledgeable about history of Oslo and Norway in general as well as the food we were eating which was all delicious. The hotdog was a highlight. Would recommend.

Our guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The first stop at the market was phenomenal, as we were able to try such a wide variety of traditional dishes. highly recommend!
