Enjoy a 4-day tour of Ethiopia’s legendary Rift Valley to see a huge diversity of wildlife. Traveling from Addis Ababa into the crater lakes of the south, you will meet some of the area’s renowned tribal people, cruise on Lake Chamo to see hippopotamus and crocodile in the wild, look for pelicans and flamingo in Lake Langano, and more. End with a city tour of Addis Ababa, and experience the hustle and bustle of Africa’s largest open-air market.
Day 1: Addis Ababa - Arba Minch
Drive through the tribal villages of southern Ethiopia en route to Arba Minch from Addis Ababa, a distance of 310 miles (515 kilometers). Noted for its diverse ethnic groups, this part of Ethiopia boasts some of the oldest cultures in the world. Stop in Tiya to visit one of the 9 sites registered by UNESCO. The afternoon is dedicated to the Dorze people, famous of their characteristic traditional huts made of twisted bamboo.
Day 2: Netch Sar National Park
In the morning you will explore Netch Sar National Park, which translates as “White Grass” in the local language, due to its grasslands. See grazing zebras, gazelles, and antelope. You will also get the chance to look for the endemic Swayne’s hartebeest, only found in Ethiopia. Enjoy an afternoon excursion by boat on Lake Chamo to see crocodiles and hippopotamus in the wild. Return to Arba Minch for your overnight stay.
Day 3: Arba Minch - Lake Langano - Abyata-Shala Lakes National Park
Depart early for a drive through the Great Rift Valley lakes region. After a relaxing lunch, continue to the secluded Wenney Eco Lodge in Lake Langano and the Munessa Forest. Here, you will have the opportunity to go bird-watching, horse-riding, or cycling in the forest, or take a cruise on the only freshwater lake in Ethiopia free of the bilharzia parasite. Look for warthogs, monkeys, and even the occassional hippo.
Next, drive to Abyata-Shala Lakes National Park, formed by the twin lakes of Abyata and Shala. Watch for the many aquatic birds, such as pelicans and flamingo. Enjoy panoramic views of the hot springs and acacia forest, before driving back to Wenney Eco Lodge for your overnight stay.
Day 4: Lake Langano - Addis Ababa
Return to Addis Ababa for an afternoon tour of the lively Merkato, the biggest open-air market in Africa, covering several square miles of the Addis Ketema district. You will also take a guided tour of the city to see the main sights, and experience the bustling city center in comfort before the end of the tour services.
