Full description
Enjoy a full-day bus trip to Mount Vesuvius from the city of Naples with a guide. Learn about the geological history of the volcano, feast your eyes on stunning views of the Bay of Naples, and watch for local wildlife including deer, eagles, and foxes. Your tour begins with a bus pick-up from your hotel. Watch as the bustling city streets melt away as you near the Bay of Naples. Here, look for majestic vistas of Mount Vesuvius, the Mediterranean Sea, and the city center of Naples as the bus ascends 1,000 meters up the steep mountainside. Upon arrival, exit the bus and hike to the lip of the crater. Listen as your volcanological and alpine guide explain the unique geology of the volcano as well as the overall formation of the nearby mountains. Take a photo with family or friends and then board the bus to return to Naples.

Standing on the crater of Vesuvius was an experience I will never forget. The pickup from Naples was an hour late but communication from the tour company was excellent. There was a bit of standing around on Vesuvius trying to find someone to do the guide in English. In the end we were given a bit of the history and left to walk on by ourselves but that was ok. It was just such a thrill to be there. There are a couple of stopping points on the walk up which is doable reasonably comfortably if you keep a steady pace. The views are amazing and watching the steam from the crater is a powerful experience.

Having booked the activity quite late, we were very happy to be able to benefit from it anyway. However, the departure was planned for the early afternoon, but there was a change of schedule at the last moment and we left Napoli in the late afternoon. We really enjoyed seeing the crater, however, it is wrong to write that we were guided by an alpine guide: we were indeed given some information, but very briefly, at the beginning of the tour. But the trip is worth it.

the pick-up was prompt from near Naples train station. Bruno got us there quickly. He then told us to return in 2 hours for collection. Again, he was prompt and speedy. The drive itself was a bit of fun through the winding roads. We found an Alpine guide on the route up but he was waiting ages for a big group so we decided to go ahead. This excursion is basically just paying extra for the taxi service rather than having to get a train & shuttle. Was it convenient? Yes! Was it about £30 more expensive per person (than sorting out own travel)? Yes! Was it worth it? I'm not sure.
