A good museum with excellent audio guide

The museum is very clear that you will only see replicas of Da Vinci’s work, and it does that job brilliantly. Explaining clearly his artistic importance and engineering genius, there is also a brief history and numerous copies of pages of the codices which are fascinating. The museum would be fabulous for younger visitors. But after a while I pined to see an original creation. My problem - not the museums.

This exhibition is unusual insofar as Da Vinci does not appear to have had any connection with Venice at all and it does not offer a single original piece of his work - only reproductions. That said, it offers valuable explanations and the sources, ie where to go see the originals elsewhere - if you can. It tells you that, for example, you can find the original l’Uomo Vitruviano at the Galleria dell’Accademia, also in Venice, but they don’t put it on general display so you are far better off seeing the reproduction here along with a decent explanation. This permanent exhibition is well worth a visit if you are in Venice and you hunger for Leonardo. Otherwise you will have to travel around much of Europe to see the original works spread across many collections.

It is a tiny museum and if you're expecting to see his paintings, you might want to skip this one. The museum does a very good job of displaying Da Vinci's genius. It also has a succinct timeline of his life but the major focus at this spot are the drawings and innovations found in his journals. The VR experience was a nice bonus too.
