Full description
This underground tour of the Catacombs takes you deeper into the unusual history of Rome, far below its busy streets and towering monuments to the concealed side of this ancient city. The tour begins at one of the most spectacular centrally located squares in Rome: Venice Square, next to the Town hall. A VIP minibus fully equipped with air conditioning will take you to the ancient Roman catacombs. The staff will provide an App City audio guide that will introduce the venue and the old road of Via Appia. Located just outside of the city and hidden deep underground, the catacombs were created in the second century in response to a shortage of land for deceased’s remains. Dating back almost 2,000 years to the 2nd century AD, this extensive network of tunnels snaking underground was once both a burial ground and a place of worship for the first Christians in Rome. With an expert guide you’ll explore these extensive tunnels lined with tombs carved right out of the rock, and hear the fascinating history of these sacred places. Due to the very limited access to the catacombs, you should make your booking in advance - especially around Easter and between May and September, when Rome swarms with travellers. The cool catacombs make for a great break from Italy’s summer heat.
  • 1h VIP return transfer from the city center to the Rome underground venue of the catacombs

  • Guided tour within the Catacombs available in 5 languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish and German) - about 45 minutes

We showed up at the meeting point, arrived at the reception they showed us the route, very kind the driver who took us to the catacombs of San Callisto. the driver prepared the tickets for us and then we waited for the entrance related to our flag as explained. Entered inside they did a brief introduction, the guide who works there. then he went downstairs. It is quite cool around 14 * degrees and very humid. Given the very beautiful but gloomy catacombs, our driver took us back to the place of departure. we saw a video guide that showed us the before and after of the various main sites, in different Roman periods.

all in all a good experience

great place and our guide was very good, he made us laugh and was good at telling about the place, :) How ever i was a little disappointed that we hardly saw any of the tombs as it all had to go so fast, it was clear that there was only a certain amount of time for each group. And then it would be good if you knew it was not allowed to photograph
