Top 5 attractions to see on a Dresden walking tour
Whether led by an expert or on your own self guided walking tour armed only with a tourist map, here are five delightful Dresden highlights to build any sightseeing checklist around!
1. Pillnitz Castle
One of Dresden's oldest buildings leads the way in a city of sightseeing treasures. Once the home of electors and kings, its complex of buildings now hosts several museums.
2. Semperoper
For over 150 years, this magnificent Baroque monument to the arts has hosted opera from German luminaries like Wagner and Strauss.
3. Zwinger
Don't miss this breathtaking palace commissioned by Augustus the Strong to rival Versailles. You'll probably want a return trip to roam its stately gardens and tour the museums.
4. Frauenkirche
The Church of our Lady was left in ruins by East Germany's post-war leaders. Its reconstruction following German reunification gave rise to a spectacular beacon of peace.
5. Church of the Holy Cross
Incarnations of the Dresden Kreuzkirche date back to the 12th century. If you can, catch a performance by its renowned boys' choir, the Dresdner Kreuzchor.
Planning Your Visit
What about the New Town?
All of the sights mentioned above feature prominently in Dresden Altstadt, or Old Town. The hipper Neustadt is better suited to seeking out cool cafés, bars, restaurants, and boutiques, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few landmarks suitable for walking tours. Our tips? Check out the Still Waters Fountain at Albertplatz and the Japanese Palace.
How do the free tours work?
Visiting Dresden on a shoestring budget? Free walking tours are a great way to see the city for cheap. But remember, your guide does this for a living! Don't forget to bring some cash in order to pay what you think the tour was worth at the end.

What people are saying about Dresden
Our tour guide Seema was amazing. The meeting point was easy to find and she was there promptly. She contacted us ahead of time and catered the tour to our three teenagers perfectly. Not one of them looked at their phone during the 2 hour tour as they were extremely interested in the information she was sharing with them about Hitler and the Third Reich. She took the time to explain the psychology of what happened to the people living during that time and at every point in the tour she left time for the kids to ask questions and look around to absorb what they were learning. The 2 hour tour seemed too short!!! I would highly recommend Seema’s tours.
I had a wonderful experience in countess von Brühl's company for 2 hours. The countess had a profound knowledge of the history of Saxony, Pillnitz Castle and court life in the 18th century. She was kind, charming and made me feel welcome, and she was stunningly beautiful in her costume. It was 2 fantastic hours!
Children and adults enjoyed this entertaining walk through Dresden's history and beautiful old town. Our guide has a great knowledge about the Saxon mobility and explained everything in a very enjoyable way. We could listen him for hours.
Not your usual tourist tour. The guide combines historical knowledge with political insights. You learn to see Dresden in a different light. Lots of information on Kurt Vonnegut - of course - placing him in the time and location of 1945
We had a very good guided tour of Dresden and the highlights. It was interesting and entertaining at the same time so that learning facts about the history and the city was fun. Highly recommend this tour.
